Scud: The Disposable Assassin, Vol. 1

The pop-art style nicely reflects the themes of media recycling and reference, that repeatedly come up in the comic. However, the themes of media sampling, and media recycling show up time and time again. I always thought I was missing out by not following these comics in their original run, but it’s sisposable to have them all in one volume. At times it comes off as a bit sophomoric or scue.

Highly recommended, as a graphic novel and as art. Taking that basic premise – Scud’s efforts to keep his first target alive – creator Rob Schrab, along with writers including Dan Harmon, toss in every idea they could possibly have and then some, creating this unbelievably ridiculous saga that’s satirical, funny, action-packed, wildly imaginative, and surprisingly engaging.

I am saying that they are tapping the same zeitgeist, and Scud got there a little bit sooner.

The story references other plots though out. Drywall, a bag of carpet that holds an extra-dimensional pocket containing a vast grid of 12×12 square rooms with walls made of drywall where he stores stuff he pilfers from around him.

He is an anti-hero, his only goal is to make enough money to keep his target alive so he won’t die. I honestly think that Xssassin paved the way for the likes of futurama, as well as the whole hyper surreal, chock full of attitude cartoons that they show on adult swim, and other such media outlets. Only Scud decides he doesn’t want to die, so he keeps his nearly-dead target alive while doing mercenary work to pay for his targets hospital bills.

The worst embodiment of these tendencies is the chief antagonist, Jeff, who speaks almost entirely through obnoxious catch phrases. Scud really took me by surprise. Reading this was something of a revelation to me: To ask other readers questions about Scudplease sign up. I had no idea what I was getting into, but what I got was absolutely, wonderfully, incredibly bonkers on almost every imaginable level. I have been tangentially familiar with Scud for probably two decades but mostly from the back pages of Gamepro Magazine or ads in other Image comics and scudd work that its creator Rob Schrab and one of its writers Dan Harmon have done since.
